Day Trip to Co-op Funeral Care
23 Nov 2019: Well we can honestly say that we have never spent a Saturday morning in a more unusual setting – Co-op Funeralcare in Doncaster.
"Why?" I hear you all asking.
Five of our swimmers (and parents) went along to collect a cheque from the Co-op as they have raised money for the swimming club as part of the The Big Co-op Payout. Every time members of the Co-op shop in their stores, 1% of what they spend on Co-op branded products helps to fund community projects in their local area. Members can select which cause their 1% goes to, so the more members that picked Dartes, the more money we received.
We were greeted on arrival by some enthusiastic staff who obviously loved their jobs. Who wouldn’t love handing thousands of pounds out to local groups? These ranged from libraries, scout groups, churches, sports clubs and many more. There were sweets, pastries, cupcakes, tea, coffee and orange juice to welcome us. Don’t worry coaches there were some custard pastries on offer so there was a bit of protein taken on board after their morning training session!
The local groups were called up one by one to receive their cheques and have their photograph taken. Representatives from the Woodlands store presented Dartes with a cheque for £1,923. Amazing! As the children walked up to collect the cheque the announcer jokingly said “these are the children that have cleared us out of pastries”. Swimmers sure no how to eat. We did inform the audience that they have all been up since 5am and have come straight from a training session so were slightly hungry!
We would like to thank the 5 swimmers for giving up their time on a Saturday morning for the photoshoot – Ella Calverley (Edl), Grace Burton (Arm), Harrison Maskrey (Adw), Megan Wood (Arm) and Violet Sykes (Adw), and the parents for delivering them on time straight from the training pool. But most of all we would like to thank Co-op for their tremendous support of the Club, and of course anyone who has nominated Dartes as their chosen local cause.
If you haven't done so already, it's easy to do so why not get involved. As you can see, it really does do great things for the club.
Kick Test for Phase 4
12 Nov 2019: Another solid test set from Phase 4. For the majority in Phase 4 there's been an 8 month interlude since their last attempt. 40 minutes of grit, determination and aching legs. Those months have produced some big time drops from Ella Calverley (Edl), Megan Wood (Arm), and Greta Highfield (Ros) Greta Highfield to name but a few. This was demonstrated in top fashion by a bright red Kate Challenger (Drn) who was consistently under the magical 7 minute marker. Not far behind her was Grace Burton (Arm) who broke the 7 minute barrier twice. Overall a very impressive display.
Maybe a good rule of thumb should be that first years need to get below 9min, 2nd years get below 8mins, and 3rd years should be faster than 7min. Of course, if you arrive with a good strong kick already, by all means give yourself a head start! Those of you struggling with kick should always set a target for yourselves in training and keep chipping away at your times - it will improve quite dramatically.
