The Stories behind the Headlines
Level X Arrives
29 Oct 2020: Level X Racing is a club time trial held in training with results being submitted to Swim England’s Rankings database. It is a fun opportunity for swimmers to practice some racing skills in the absence of competitions due to COVID-19. Swim England will publish leaderboards at designated times throughout the racing period to celebrate success. In addition to the top 10 leaderboards, all submitted times can be viewed on the rankings system, and multiple times can be submitted for each person.
It is intended to be a low-key affair to fit within the restrictions under which we currently operate. So that means no crowds of adoring fans (commonly known as "parents"), very few officials poolside, and limited numbers of swimmers so that social distancing remains possible. It is expected to take place during normal training sessions.
Over the next few months it will cover most events on the usual programme. Up first in November it's the turn of the sprints (50m and 100m including IM). In coming months we'll shift focus to 200m and 400m, etc. At Dartes, Phase 5 will open our Level X account on Saturday and if there's time, Phase 3 will join in too. Once the first session has been evaluated, the coaches will consider the next step.
We expect everyone to race everything initially. No one has put times on British Swimming's rankings system for 6 months, and it could be that they are needed for meet qualifying sometime next year. Some of you have events you've never done before (or not for a long time), so this is a good opportunity to fill those gaps. Take this seriously, treat it like a normal meet and swim fast.
As an added incentive, despite the lower standard of judging, we will be accepting Level X times for Dartes records. They will be clearly marked as Level X though. Without including them, many of you are likely to miss a full season of eligibility on those records which doesn't seem right.
To protect the team (swimmers, coaches, and officials alike) anyone poolside must maintain the usual 2m social distancing. Take those rules seriously as things are getting extremely dangerous again. For our first session on Saturday, it's highly likely that only 3 or 4 lanes will be used for racing, the remainder will be used for swimming down or training. That should also help keep people safely distanced and allow optimal preparation and recovery between races.
For those currently isolating, don't worry. We hope to run these time trials a few times for each squad to give most of you the chance to set times in the full range of events. For a few of you, that still might not be possible.
Your coaches will let you know when you will race and which events you'll be racing. If you wish to give your racing suit a splash feel free to dust it off and bring it along.
Open Letter to Mayor
20 Oct 2020: Earlier in the week Head Coach Dave Cuthbert and Welfare Officer Suzy penned the following letter to the Mayors of Doncaster (Ros Jones) and Sheffield (Dan Jarvis) to plead the case for swimming pools to remain open should South Yorkshire be pushed to Tier 3. We're sure we weren't alone in that.
Dear Dan and Ros
In these unprecedented times the decisions we all must make are difficult, challenging and have repercussions we would rather not see but must accept for the greater good.
We write to you as one of these difficult choices is upon us. The move to Tier 3 for South Yorkshire will be part of the current discussions you are having but all we ask is that careful consideration is taken on the repercussions for the young and talented children if the sport they love is taken from them once again.
South Yorkshire has, and continues, to produce some of the most talented national swimmers and Doncaster has, and is, playing its part. The impact of Covid on swimming was immense; no access to the water for many months, the wellbeing and mental health of these young athletes adversely affected and all at a time when education, exams and life in general was thrown up in the air.
We plead with you to consider the impact further leisure centre closures will have on these young athletes. As the majority of the county will see leisure centres remain open under Tier 1 and 2 restrictions, a move to Tier 3 for South Yorkshire will be devastating for our young people who have finally had the chance to return to the pool.
The anguish a further closure will cause on these young people is palpable. To see them lose the sport they love so much is heart-breaking and its effects could be long term. Whilst Dame Sarah Storey is not representing sport in her role at SCR, she does understand first hand the commitment and strength it takes to train at these high levels and the hurt and upset it would cause for the sport you love and adore to be taken away, not just once but for a second time with no known return date.
Jane Nickerson - Swim England Chief Executive – has written to the government to implore for the need to keep leisure centres open. www.swimming.org/swimengland/short-sighted-closing-leisure-centres/.
Research shows the prevalence of coronavirus in swimming pools, leisure centres and gyms is extremely low and they should not be forced to close under the new restrictions taken to tackle the pandemic.
The decision is a local one that will affect hundreds of young people in swimming clubs locally and thousands more using leisure facilities for swimming lessons and other sports unable to access outdoor alternatives.
Our swimmers took to the cold open water at Manvers and Hatfield during the initial lockdown, but this will not be possible for most of them as the temperatures plummet from the warm of the summer months.
A reintroduction of restrictions will cause chaos for the pool operators, businesses and employees with even more pools unlikely to reopen after this second wave of financial impact.
All we can ask is that the merits of positive impacts on mental health, physical health are considered before any decision is made on Tier 3 restrictions. Leisure centres serve the whole community and any closures will be drastic for South Yorkshire.
If the unfortunate closing of venues such as leisure centres and gyms does happen, we would appreciate details of any plans to ensure provision remains available for elite athletes, youth and disabled sport and physical activity in Doncaster.

400m Kick Test Returns
18 Oct 2020: The first Phase 4 kick test set since returning from lockdown brought home some good results. Three dipping beneath the 7min average target, Emma Mitchell (Drn) for the first time with a massive improvement. Three very consistent reps from her. We also had Jenson Owen (Edl) setting a sub 7min rep on his first outing since moving up. It's likely he'll average below next time.
Inching in front of Emma at the front though was Grace Burton (Arm). A very close fought battle, 6:49 to 6:52 - well done to both girls.

Jesse Selected for Regional Talent
16 Oct 2020: Back in August we received news of swimmers selected for the older end of the England Talent pathway. Today we were notified of our latest swimmer selected for the Regional step on the ladder (the 2nd rung).
Following on from his selection for County Pathway last season, Jesse Goodwin (Adw) earned his spot at Regional for 2021. Due to current restrictions, most of this camp will be held online, with educational videos and other resources available to him.
First 800 Test for Phase 4
5 Oct 2020: The Phase 4 test sets have been going for a fair few years now and the rankings include some pretty exceptional athletes. It's unusual for someone to hit the top of the leaderboard on just their second attempt, but that's what Rose Keefe (Spa) managed this time around. It's around 1 full minute away from the squad record of 9:53 but the current Phase 4 has a very young average age by comparison.
There are some pretty large improvements across the board, especially considering lockdown has limited their training which will have a huge impact on these longer distances. Keep up the hard work, see how much more you can drop next time round.
